So what IS Twitter?

To some people Twitter is a complete hassle. To others Twitter is a very important tool for their marketing efforts.

So how can Twitter help you?

Let’s start with Branding.

There is a debate among many strategists concerning what we should be branding. Our name or our image. Is there a difference? Sure there is. You should look at it in terms of the difference between advertising or marketing. So when we are thinking about how to reach our target customer we should be thinking about what that customer is going to mentally view about us when we do find them.

I believe that many marketers that are first starting out try to push a particular product. And then they choose another and then another. The possible result could be that the target audience will connect this person with the product. So they are not easily identifiable in the market place. When that product looses it’s appeal or market share then their name recognition is gone as well. This is where branding comes into the picture. And it starts with what the marketer wants people to know about themselves or their companies. To be successful you must put some thought into what you are.

What does that mean?

Think about the most successful companies. They have some kind of brand….logo. And that logo will connect them to the idea that they are wanting to convey to you, whether it is a single product or a product line or a social image that is attached to a product or service. This logo is telling you a story. This is marketing. They have defined what they want you to know and have incorporated that into a symbol or slogan that delivers a certain message. That is marketing.

So what is advertising?

It’s simple. Advertising is the tool that you will use to get you message out to your target market. You will advertise your logo, your slogan or whatever it is that defines you or your company. That is advertising.

So let’s go back to branding.

Branding is the process of creating that logo or slogan and making a decision as to how you are going to get that logo (brand) out to your target market. And then you get all over it! This is branding. Identifying yourself or company with an image or slogan that will deliver a message to your target market through the process of advertising. This is where Twitter comes into the picture. Twitter in one of your channels that you would use to get that message out to your market.

And if you are lucky then others will find you engaging and will follow you and then you are in the viral marketplace. It is a nice place to be.

“Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses.”

Do your homework.

Like so many things that find their way onto our plates Twitter can be very time consuming and distracting. Remember…it is just a tool. One of many.
